Tuki appreciates Dikshit for ensuring safety of NE students

ITANAGAR, Nov 10: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki has appreciated Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's efforts for ensuring the safety of youths, especially students and working women, of the north eastern region staying in the national capital.

A special police cell for the safety and security of north eastern youth formed last year has greatly strengthened the security apparatus for the youth of the north eastern region in the National Capital Region, Tuki said while addressing the closing ceremony of the two day Northeast Festival at New Delhi yesterday.

The Delhi government, he said, has provided land for building hostels for ladies in Delhi University and a northeast hostel at JNU.

He also informed that the Delhi Chief Minister has assured them of providing land for building a separate North East Cultural Centre in Delhi.

On the feeling of insecurity of youths outside the north eastern region, Tuki said "These insecurities are sometimes fuelled by anti-social elements and we should not let ourselves be overpowered by these forces".

Emphasising the role of youth as "very significant" in shaping the future of the country, Tuki said, "It is inevitable that we need to focus our energy to nurture the youth and make them capable of driving our region and country forward."  "Ours is a region which gives the highest regard to cultural sensitivity and has strong socio-cultural and moral traditions," he said.

The North-East Festival which was organized with the support of the Union Home Ministry, Ministry of DoNER, Planning Commission and the State Governments of the eight North Eastern states, felicitated the North East Icons, like Mary Kom, Actor Adil Hussain and journalist Arnab Goswami among a host of others.

While lauding the organizers for conceptualizing such programme, Tuki believed that North East Festival would go a long way in promoting the salient features of beautiful NE region.

“As we all know India’s North East is a region with tremendous possibilities. Its geography and diversity makes it a unique tourism destination and offers variety of options to tourists from all over the world. The Region has seen rapid development in the past few years to make up for the basic infrastructural gaps to make the region at par with the rest of the country in the parameters of development.

A lot of work is happening on the ground and we strongly believe that the results will be visible in a few years from now. There have been efforts to increase our engagements – both economic and cultural – with the bordering South East Asian countries. The full implementation of the features of the Look East Policy would greatly enhance the collective scope of the region” Tuki emphatically said.

While admiring the North East icons for facing many challenges and adversity to take the country and the region in national and international heights, the Chief Minister called upon the youths to recognize their attainments and take it as inspiration to put their best foot forward to achieve desired milestones.

“Their lives are lessons in themselves and goes on to prove that we can also be the best in all that we do, the question is only about the perseverance, resolve and dedication to our tasks. As we continue to derive strength from our diversity and look forward towards a better and meaningful tomorrow, I congratulate the icons and wish them all the best and I am sure they will continue to inspire us in the times ahead” he exhorted.

Tuki underscored the role of youth as very significant in shaping the future of the region and country.

“It is therefore, inevitable that we need to focus all our energies to nurture the youth and make them capable of driving our region and country forward,” he assertively said.

Later, Tuki, accompanied by Pema Khandu, Tourism Minister and Brahma Chaudhary, Advisor (NE), Planning Commission visited the Arunachal Tourism stall set up in the festival to highlight the tourism potentials of the state. Apart from providing printed promotional materials, the visitors were shown eye-catching video clippings of several places of tourist interest and destinations in Arunchal Pradesh.

ITANAGAR, Nov 10: The picturesque Tawang town today erupted in anger over acute power shortage prevailing in the district headquarter. With the onset of harsh winter, residents are battling for survival due to erratic power supply. Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it’

Kaling Jerang

‘The tribes are being spoilt’ is a cry that has been and is often heard in the power corridors of New Delhi, ‘Cut off funds and let them try running their schools, hospitals and engineering services out of their own resources, only then will they understand how much they have to be grateful for’.

Keeping in mind the fact that ‘history should not be ignored, for if you forget the past, you are doomed to repeating it’, it has to be remembered that it was not NEFA (as Arunachal was called and known then) who took initiative in seeking and establishing contacts outside their habitat but it was the latter  who, for purposes of industrial growth, strategic necessity or other considerations of self interest did initiate contacts that were neither initiated nor desired by the tribal people themselves.

Meaning to say that Arunachal Pradesh with all its numerous resources ranging from water and hydropower, rich and varied flora and fauna, the deep and dark timber forests, various mines and minerals and the untapped tourism potential, can still manage to have a self sufficient and self reliant economy without fully being dependent and administered like a medieval fiefdom of New Delhi based ‘high commands’.

The time surely has arrived when we need to initiate serious re-thinking exercises for developing a non-dependent, self reliant and pragmatic and viable resource generating state economic policy based on an Arunachal centric vision document.

To my mind, to achieve what we are dreaming about, we need a complete restructuring of the conventional policies and programmes designed, developed and propagated from New Delhi to cater to the national needs. Instances like mindless signing of numerous MoAs with the power developers without the prior and informed consent of the local dwellers with unseen kickbacks running into crores filling the coffers of the Phantoms living in New Delhi is nothing but broad daylight economic rape of a tribal state. No wonder it is New Delhi which decides who should be appointed the Chief Minister of a state when it comes to any national political parties.

These wrongs can be righted only if we resolve and pledge to build a home of our own form now on without frequenting New Delhi to seek ‘suggestions’ even to decide the right kind of materials for building a house! It is time to ponder how and why the Rio model of governance is so successful in the state of Nagaland.  Neiphiu Rio is heading the Naga Peoples’ Front for the third successive term. The same is the case with Sikkim. Sikkim, for that matter, is economically far poorer in terms of resources than Arunachal; why then Pawan Kumar Chamling has been so successfully governing this tiny state for more than a decade? These are issues and questions that each and every legislator including the educated sections of the state ought to discuss and debate so that we could evolve a similar model for our state specific to our needs and aspirations. It is said that if we re not part of a solution, then we are the problems ourselves.

Like Nagaland and Sikkim, Arunachal too has its own historical, geographical, economic and demographic peculiarity. It is of vital importance to have a regional party at the helm to mould the future of the state in a secure, healthy and desired direction.

The case of illegal immigration in Assam (former Governor of Assam Lt. Gen. (Retd.) SK Sinha’s report in this regard is well known), the fate of the indigenous tribals in Tripura etc are only some examples why we need a strong regional party to promote indigenous peoples’ long term interest. It is time we bypass the so-called national parties and give power to one of our own. Shouldn’t we then dream of, conceive, plan, build and promote the only existing regional party of the state- Peoples’ Party of Arunachal?

Wake me up when they are gone to sleep!

Vipasha Bhardwaj

First of all a caveat; If you are friends with such people, you are already half way down to the Great Indian Bore Well. As Indian we are quite lucky! Wonder why? We may face the perpetual scarcity of much essential items (forget about the essentials store that we are blessed with in Tezpur University, by evening, the ‘essentials’ are already digested) but we never run out of them-Bores. India or for that matter your immediate locality, that is, your classroom is swarmed with such brilliant all-time bores (Oh God! Why). Roti, kapda and makaan aren’t maintaining a legacy but bores have made a conglomeration of clan! Well, atleast we excel in something. The lineage could be traced back to India’s Parliament House where we have amazing iconic bores snoozing over screaming matches and fisticuffs and  our legendary netas, oblivious as they have always been towards the plight of the destitute, are too concerned with their power naps!

Even in as respected a game as cricket, bores have made an essential inroad. Just think back. Chandu Borde, Vijay Hazare, Bapu Nadkarni have put thousands of spectators to sleep (with due regards to their fabulous contribution to Indian cricket). The great Indian dirty old man, Khushwant Singh, specializes in re-writing the same old hackneyed jokes sent by his readers but lives in a self-complacency of having a witty repartee faculty.

Another kind of bore to run a mile away from is ‘Psy’ over whom the world is going nuts and his silly Gangnam style is the highest played track on the turntable. Honestly, its nothing compared to Salman Khan’s buckle dance.

Now the ‘heart of the matter’ is why do we put up with bores? May be we are secretly masochistic and crave punishment for all our past deeds that we inevitably or are pre-destined to fall in their company or maybe we see bores as harmless creatures. I’ve had my share of bores and my generalization is, they are more often than not self-obsessed, lousy braggarts, utter one syllable at a time and they tell their tales with such gusto and enthusiasm that I can’t gather courage to ask them to shut up. So it justifies my title, isn’t it? To misquote Oscar Wilde, “my own business always bores me to death. I prefer other people to leave me at my own risk”.

Create tourist friendly atmosphere

The three-day Adventure Festival organized by dept of tourism at Mechuka came to an end yesterday evening with PWD, Finance & Planning Minister Chowna Mein declaring the gala event closed. This festival comes after recent Tawang festival which was celebrated last month at Tawang and Ziro music festival held in the month of September at Ziro valley. There are numerous other festivals lined up for celebration in coming month throughout the state. There is no doubt that these festivals are becoming major tourist attraction leading to increase inflow of tourists into the state.

However, the question lingers whether we are ready as ‘host’ to welcome the visiting tourist. Some of the region of state are notorious for hooliganism and in the past tourist had very bad experience. The tourism department should concentrate in giving awareness to these people. They should be taught nitty-gritty of hospitality. If our people are not tourist friendly there is no point in organizing so many festivals to woo the visitors. The tourism department should pay more attention towards creating tourist friendly atmosphere instead of celebrating innumerable number of festival and wasting money on construction of useless tourism infrastructure like lodge, cafeteria etc.

Forestry students deprived

Dear Editor,

Through the column of your esteemed daily, we would like to bring to the notice of state forest department regarding the increasing unemployment problem of forestry graduates in our state. Am writing this in connection, with the article written by Onima Mize and Bhanu Riba that appeared in Arunachal times dated 5thNov 2013 regarding pathetic condition of forestry graduates.

It is really matter of deep pain and anguish, the way concern department is neglecting forestry graduate in competitive examination of RFO and ACF. Since, from last many years the forest department has been ignoring the forestry graduate by not keeping reservation quotas for the forestry background after several requests by us. The inspector General of Forest of ICFRE( Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education) Dehradhun, Govt, of India has given directives to state govt, to recognize Forestry subject as Agri-Alleid subject with his letter (No. 11- 86/Edu/ICFRE/Pt/453)dated.20th sept.2012..

It is clearly written to consider forestry graduate in any open competitive examination like RFO and ACF. Several states like Himachal Pradesh, Orissa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Jammu and Kashmir have their own reservation policies for recruitment of RFO/ACF, keeping quotas for forestry background. If we consider north-east region Meghalaya has separate reservation and Nagaland has made Forestry subject compulsory optional paper for (Paper-l and Paper-11,). In India 26 Universities offer forestry subjects in B.Sc, M.Sc and Ph.D levels, and every year an average of 10-15 Arunachalee students are passing out from various universities like NERIST and COLLEGE OF HORTICULTURE AND FORESTRY, PASIGHAT, UHF college Solan and FRI, Dehradun etc leading to rising unemployment problem. Besides these the department of Agriculture and Horticulture debars forestry graduates from attending interviews for the various posts for BTM and SMS under ATMA.

Job dream is falling down

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed daily, we would like to point out the shortcoming in providing training to various trainees who are undergoing training at different technical institution across the country, after getting selected through job Mela held at IG Park very recently by the state govt.

In order to get better employment avenues, the trainees who were mostly students studying in various institutions had left their academic career and joined the job mela for getting vocational training in different fields. But, now, it is revealed that only 75% placement facility will provided by those training institute after completion of the training successfully. Then my question is what will be the fate of rest 25% trainees who had already discontinued their studies hoping for 100% placement guarantee through the job mela.

Further, the trainee’s parents and guardians are not able to get touch with their wards as they are undergoing training in different institutions of the country which has no any branch in our state. The state govt should have given preference to those institutions for imparting training which has branches in our state so that the parents and guardians of the trainees could have easily got in touch with their wards.

The scheme is being implemented through Govt, of India funding scheme wherein all sorts of provision for fooding, lodging, transportation facility and training course is borne by the govt. We think the rate of unemployment will further rise to higher rate- after completion of the training by those trainees as the govt and the institute concern are not going to provide 100% placement to those trainees who had already left their academic career. Is this not a game- being played by the govt, and the training institute with the fate of the unemployed youth of the state?

Yours,

Tana Rasso Tara

Asst. Finance Secretary APPDSU

Yupia deprived of basic facilities

Dear Editor,

Through the column of your esteemed daily, we on behalf of indigenous people of Papum Pare District, would like to draw the kind attention of the concerned Deputy Commissioner, Yupia and Govt, of Arunachal Pradesh about the need to set up SBI branch and ATM facilities at district headquarter, Yupia.

Papum Pare District was created in 22nd Sept. 1992 and it’s headquarter is Yupia. However till today it lacks basic facilities like SBI branch and ATM facilities.

The people of Yupia are facing lots of problems due to lack of modern facilities. It also badly affects those who comes from outside for official work. They have to go back Naharlagun for withdrawing or deposit of their money. The nearest SBI branch and ATM facilities available at Naharlagun is quite far and during emergency cases it becomes very problematic especially for the pedestrian.

Therefore, we request Deputy Commissioner, Yupia and Govt, of Arunachal Pradesh, to immediately intervene and establish SBI branch and ATM facilities at district headquarter, Yupia for greater interest of district as well as state.

Yours,

Tem Tama Tarh
